si or ssi?
When do you add si for ‘zhu’ or ssi for the ‘sh’sound? You will notice that there is a slight difference in the sounds the letter make, but it is subtle and often difficult to hear.
If you can discriminate the sounds audibly, then go with them, but if not, then think about the root word.
The root word of possession is possess, so it already ends in a double s. In words that end in a double s, just think ss + ion + ssion
progress – progression (meaning to get better)
If a word ends in a se, drop the e and add ion.
confuse – confus + ion = confusion ( meaning to be unsure about what is happening)
If a word ends in a de, drop the de and add sion.
erode – ero + sion = erosion (meaning wearing away)
