Spellings week beginning 18/9/23

When adding the suffixes ment ness less and ful, there is no need to alter the root word as they all begin with a consonant. Well, that makes life a little easier doesn’t it when learning this rule?

The only think you need to think about is this:

If the root word ends in a y, then the swap the y to an I before adding the suffix.

e.g mercy – merciful. ( note ful has one l as a suffix )

You do not need to swap double or drop anything else.

Words ending in an e can keep the e before adding the suffixes, less, ment, ness and ful

e.g voice – voiceless

Your spellings this week are:

Penniless

Harmless

Coziness

Likeness

Pavement

Embarrassment

Peaceful

Successful

Powerless

sleepiness
