The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems

  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Mathematics Calculation Policy

Here at Allesley, we have a calculation policy which will helps staff and parents to track the different methods used in each year group and also enables them to understand how the methods progress as the children move through the school.

Maths Curriculum By Year Group

Children in each year group are working towards a set of targets (taken from the national curriculum) which can be found in their books. We call these Target Trees, a copy of which can be viewed here by clicking on the relevant year group. Copies of the these documents are also sent home at the beginning of each year, which we hope will enable parents to support their children in working towards the expectations within them.
